In 2006, a young Doug Reed stepped onto a small indoor court with a group of friends who simply loved the game. There was no club badge, no academy, no grand ambitions just the raw excitement of playing futsal. Nearly two decades later, Doug Reed stands as one of the most accomplished English futsal players in history, having earned over 100 caps for the national team, received the prestigious Golden Cap, and shaped a career that spans elite performance, international media and sport development.

His journey began with Manchester Futsal Club.
“At that time it wasn’t really a club,” Doug recalls. “It was just a group of lads who met once a week to play futsal on an indoor football court. So it has been remarkable to witness the club evolve to where it has youth and senior teams for male and female, running leagues, coaching courses and competing in the UEFA Futsal Champions League. No one even dreamed it would become what it is today.”
Doug’s transition from football to futsal was fuelled by passion for the faster, more intense version of the game. While most young English players set their sights on 11-a-side glory, Doug was drawn to the constant involvement and quick decision-making futsal demanded.
“I’d been playing small-sided football with adults since school and loved how you were constantly involved. When I learned about futsal, I knew I wanted to try it. The unmatched intensity only accentuated the things I loved most about the game.”

His passion turned into performance. Doug quickly evolved from a curious newcomer to a national team player - and didn’t stop until he had 100 caps to his name.
“I still clearly remember dreaming of just one England appearance,” he reflects. “I’m proud of myself for committing 100% even though I wasn’t sure if all that effort would bring a return. The Gold Cap will always be a reminder of all the great memories and challenges overcome.”
Doug’s international journey also took him beyond England. He played professionally in Spain and Croatia - two of futsal’s powerhouse nations - experiences that exposed him to elite coaching, tactical sophistication, and a passionate futsal culture that England was yet to build.

“The level was completely different,” Doug explains. “I went from training once a week in England to playing in one of the best leagues in the world with professionals who had grown up with the sport. And off the court, you had fans filling the arenas, media coverage - it was a different world.”
Those experiences shaped not only his playing style - one heavily influenced by the intelligent, movement-based Spanish model - but also his perspective. He soaked in different cultures, languages, and leadership styles. That adaptability now defines his work off the court.
Today, Doug works as an international sports consultancy, contributes to futsal's growth globally through his work with FIFA, and has completed the prestigious UEFA Master’s program - an elite course designed for future leaders in football and sport.
Futsal gave me amazing experiences and memories that shaped my life,” he says. “Now I want to help grow the game so more people can have the opportunities I was lucky to have.”

His UEFA Master’s experience, which took him around the world learning from leaders in sport and business, culminated in a dissertation on futsal competition development- evidence of how deeply he’s invested in the sport’s future. But despite his global footprint, Doug has never lost sight of where it all began.
“I hope my journey shows young players - especially those at clubs like Manchester Futsal - that futsal can offer incredible and valuable experiences. The game has so much to give.”
As for the future of futsal in England, Doug is cautiously optimistic - but ambitious.
“The sport has a huge long-term future. It's been on a gradual upward trajectory, with some setbacks, but with the right investment and approach, it could take off very rapidly. I am eager to play a role in that growth.”
Doug Reed’s story is not just one of personal success. It's a symbol of what's possible when talent meets passion, and when the love of the game leads to something greater.
From humble beginnings in Manchester to representing his country over 100 times and shaping the global futsal landscape - Doug’s journey is proof that futsal, when embraced fully, can open up the world.
